Hello Fellow Wheat Weavers,
The years of 2020 and 2021 were certainly unusual for us.
Our 2020 NAWW annual convention in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was planned and ready to go with amazing projects and several new international instructors scheduled to share their talents with us when Covid hit the world and shut everything down, causing us to cancel the convention.
The following year Covid again kept us from holding an in-person convention.
Not wanting to go another year without meeting to weave together, the NAWW Board and Joan Dulcey tried a new approach by holding a convention on Zoom. Once a month we met on Zoom to weave some wonderful projects. Many of you participated. This method allowed many international members as well as others who are often unable to attend conventions to join us. It invited non-members to join for a class to see what NAWW and wheat weaving is all about. This has helped to increase our membership. Several new instructors shared their talents with us as well. Thank you to all of the Zoom instructors and the Board. I think it was a great success.
Because of this situation we have compiled The NAWW Unconventional Convention Workbook. It includes all the wonderful projects planned for the Pittsburgh PA Convention and all of the wonderful projects taught on Zoom. We thank all of the instructors for allowing us to include their projects in this Workbook.
The book contains 22 wonderful projects with instructions from 17 talented instructors, seven of whom are new instructors to many of us. Plait directory pages are not reprinted in the book. There are several pages of new plaits and techniques not in our Plait Directory . I think this workbook is a true inspiration. There are projects for all skill levels. You will learn several new plaits or practice ones you are less familiar with. You can explore new techniques such a straw quilling, Mexican Popotillo, beautiful straw embroidery, and look at plaiting in a different light as you construct a straw clock among other item
The thing that I find most inspiring is, whether it is a bigger or smaller project, you will be challenged to try something new and step out of your comfort zone. Many of the projects encourage you to combine familiar plaits in a new way, to add dimension and texture to your work. The Popotillo work is not only different than anything we do,it is fun and relaxing and challenges you to use lots of non-traditional colors as you fill in the drawing.
Every project offers an opportunity to learn and stretch your weaving skills. Even if you do not do the printed project you can learn many things from the photos and directions to enhance your work. Wheat is a unique and versatile medium, so have fun exploring your creativity.
