The NAWW Plait Directory is an attempt to compile step-by-step directions and histories of all known straw plaits, also known as straw braids, into an easy reference for both beginners and experienced straw artists. It is our desire that this book be of benefit to all users, the NAWW, and to the art of straw work.

History of the Plait Directory
In 1996, DeAnn Stephens, president of NAWW, Inc. appointed a committee to begin work on this book. The committee researched the NAWW Convention workbooks and other resource material for the plait directions that are contained in the directory. Some changes have been made for clarification and consistency in terminology. Often there are several names for the same plaits, and we have tried to include all the ones that are known to us at this time. Some directions may be a combination of several individuals’ work. We have tried to ensure that appropriate credit has been made.

The Current Plait Directory
The current Plait Directory is a combination of the original Plait Directory 1998 and the First Addition 2005. The current print cover is that of the First Addition. The original portion of the directory includes instructions for more than 100 plaits and variations in 169 pages. The first addition includes instructions for 17 additional plaits, 26 techniques, and 22 items of Swiss Straw work.

Ongoing Project
The Plait Directory is an ongoing project. We welcome suggestions for plaits to be included in additions. We also welcome suggestions of alternate names or methods, plait histories, and any corrections in the step-by-step directions. The NAWW is currently publishing new plaits as separate pages with the Gleanings, the official magazine of the NAWW, so members can include those updates with their directories.

Shipping costs vary by format (print or USB drive) and shipping location. There is no cost for sending the PDF via email.

If you are paying with PayPal, an invoice from National Association of Wheat Weavers will be sent to you after shipping costs, if any, are determined.
